#TGIFC584 — Color Challenge with Scalloped Blooms

By | July 3, 2026

It’s time for a new TGIF Challenge! This week, we have a color challenge using Coastal Cabana, Lemon Lime Twist, and Basic Black. The black made me think of the beautiful Artisan Sketched Garden Designer Series Paper (DSP), which is printed in black and white and perfect for coloring. Stampin’ Blends Markers would be the perfect choice for coloring, but you can also use watercoloring techniques! (Note: I probably would have selected Stampin’ Blends for this project, they don’t come in Coastal Cabana. So sad… But, I saw this as a great opportunity to show a different method. 🙂

I couldn’t decide which images from the Artisan Sketched Garden DSP to watercolor so I made two cards, one with a bunch of flowers and another with two of the vases. Since I could only use the two challenge colors, I watercolored some of the flowers with only Coastal Cabana ink and others with a combination of Coastal Cabana and Lemon Lime Twist. This gave the coloring a little more variety.

Here are a few tips for watercoloring the DSP: Since water/ink will absorb quickly, mix water with the ink first (in the lid of your ink pad) to achieve the correct tone. Then, layer on more intense color for contrast. Leave some areas light. This will also help show more variation.

After the paper dried, I used a White Gel Pen to add dots to the centers of the flowers and vases.

Next, I used the Scalloped Blooms Bundle to cut out the background die-cuts and stamp the sentiments on the card front and inside. I LOVE this bundle! It’s a great staple for my stamping stash because of the variety of sentiments and simple scalloped shapes that coordinate with just about anything.

I also included a layer of Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper. (I cut one sheet in half to fit on both cards.) I watercolored a wash with both Coastal Cabana and Lemon Lime Twist. Then, when the paper dried, I splattered the layer with water droplets, waited a bit, and mopped it up with a paper towel to create water spots.

Here’s the inside.

For both cards, I heat embossed the sentiments in white on Basic Black Cardstock and fussy cut around them. Then, to make them stand out, I layered the sentiments over a Scalloped Bloom label die-cut. The labels for both cards were a little large, so I trimmed down the straight side on the left to better fit the particular sentiments.

Finally, I added some Shimmering Dots in both Coastal Cabana and Lemon Lime Twist as well as some black baker’s twine.

Here’s the inside of the second card.
