#TGIFC180 Color Challenge

By | October 5, 2018

Happy Friday!  Today, we have a pretty color challenge at TGIF Challenges, including Melon Mambo, Basic Black, Mango Melody, and Coastal Cabana.  To see all the designers’ projects, click the photo below to go to the TGIF Challenges Blog.

I actually made two cards for this challenge.  I started with an idea … and it was one of those days when nothing was coming out the way I had pictured it in my mind.  I kept thinking, I can do better than that, and then I’d try, and it looked worse.  Haha!  After numerous attempts, and a trash can full of failures, I decided to switch gears and do something entirely different.  I don’t know about you, but sometimes that’s the best course of action for me.  Anyway, it made me feel better and I love the card I created below.

When I’m feeling frustrated and need a boost of confidence, I like to revert to what I know I do best.  I love good old coloring, so I broke out my brand new Spirited Snowman stamp set and started working on this adorable little guy.  I stamped with Jet Black Stazon ink on Shimmery White Cardstock and started watercoloring with the challenge colors.

Another fun thing I did on this card was use my new Buffalo Check background stamp!  I stamped with Coastal Cabana ink on Whisper White Cardstock.  Typically, I would stamp on matching Shimmery White Cardstock, but I liked the way the image came out using the Whisper White better.  It has something to do with the nice smooth finish of Stampin’ Up!’s Whisper White paper.

I cut out all the circle dies using the Layering Circles Framelits dies.  One is embossed with the Swirls & Curls Textured Impression Embossing Folder, which I thought added some movement to my skating snowman.  The smaller circle was cut from Coastal Cabana Cardstock and then embossed with white snowflakes.  Afterwards, I sponged some Champagne Shimmer Paint on the edges of all the circle dies as well as the raised portions of the embossed die.

OK, so back to my original card.  The next day, I looked at it and thought maybe it wasn’t as bad as I thought.  I was trying to get more vibrant colors in the water and lower the horizon so there was more sky and less water.  I have to admit though, that I did really like the way the sky came out on this version.
I used the Waterfront stamp set for this card and stamped on Watercolor Paper.  For the sky and water, I used the z-shaped stamp and long single brush stroke stamp to add one ink color at a time, starting with Coastal Cabana, and then Melon Mambo, Mango Melody, and Tuxedo Black Memento ink.  After stamping each color, I used an Aqua Painter to blend the ink and create the clouds and water.  Memento ink is water-soluble so it’s perfect for watercoloring!
I blended the trees, island, and hut with a very dry brush just to smooth things out a little.
I decided I wanted a little extra interest, so I used the Stitched Labels Framelits Dies to add stitching around the edges of the main panel.  Tip:  Use old wasshi tape to secure the dies in place so they don’t move.  As you can see, I had a little “happening” as I was die cutting … the dies cut little notches in my corners, but I actually like the results!
To complete my card, I used some Tropical Thinlits die cuts, Tropical Elements embellishments, and Pick-A-Pattern Washi Tape.  Also, I wanted this to be a birthday card, so I borrowed a sentiment from Sunshine Sayings.
So what do you think?  There are parts of this card I really like, but I’m still not entirely sure.

I love both of your cards, but I stopped by to get a closer look at your tropical card. I absolutely love it. I do know how you feel about things not coming out like you have them in your head and having to change gears completely; and also about coming back to a “failed”project in a day or so and thinking, “this wasn’t so bad after all!” Glad you posted both projects!
