#TGIF162 Color Challenge!

By | June 1, 2018

It’s June 1st and that means two things!  First, the new Annual Catalog goes live today!!!  After all the anticipation, I’m sure you’re as excited as I am!  There are so many fantastic new products and all the gorgeous new colors!  Oh my gosh, it’s hard to choose what I’m most excited about.  Please remember that online ordering will be down from midnight to noon MT while Stampin’ Up! transitions to the new catalog.  However by noon MT, or 11:00 AM PT for all us Californians, you should be good to go!

Second, it’s Friday and that means it’s time for a new TGIF color challenge!!!  This week’s colors include Smoky Slate, Night of Navy, and Old Olive.  These colors are earthy, elegant, and subtle.  They work great for projects featuring natural elements.

Before I get to my card, please follow this link to the TGIF Challenges website so you can check out the designers’ amazing projects using these colors.

When I originally saw this color challenge, I realized that all three of these colors have matching Stampin’ Blends Markers!!!  So, I decided to focus my whole project around using those markers and some fun techniques.  I used Stampin’ Blends Markers to color vellum paper behind embossing, to color Silver Foil embossed leaves, and to color ombre backgrounds!

The stamps and dies on this card all use the new Nature’s Poem Suite of products on page 142 and 143 on the new catalog, including the Rooted in Nature stamp set and Nature’s Roots Framelits Dies.  (You can purchase both items in a bundle for 10% off!)  I just got the bundle, and I’m so excited to start using it!!!  The stamp set is huge with gorgeous tree, leaf, and wood images.  And the framelits dies not only include dies to cut around most of the images, but they also include the three embossing dies I used to create the foil leaves on my card.

To really make the embossing dies work well, I first cut the leaves out of Silver Foil and then I used Big Shot Embossing Mats to add the embossing.  I had to play with them a little.  I realized that the embossing mat moves as it gets squished through the Big Shot, so I ended up using the cutting dies to hold the paper and embossing dies in place.  That worked well.  Afterwards, I used the Dark Old Olive and Night of Navy Stampin’ Blends Markers to color the front of the Silver Foil.  Ooh, I just love this look!

I was really drawn to the leaf stamps in the Rooted in Nature stamp set.  They are so delicate and pretty!  I embossed them in white on vellum paper, then used Old Olive Stampin’ Blends Markers to color the backside of the vellum.  This technique adds a subtle coloration that’s see-through.

For the background of my card, I cut strips of Whisper White card stock, and then used Smoky Slate, Old Olive, and Night of Navy Stampin’ Blends Markers to color them in an ombre pattern from dark to light.  This creates a nice solid background to break up all the busy colors in the center of the card.

The main panel in the background is Shimmery White Cardstock.  I used a smooching technique to watercolor with the three challenge colors.  To accomplish this, I used a Silicone Craft Sheet.  First, I squeezed my stamp pad to pool ink in the lid.  Then, I used an Aqua Painter to add a little water, and I painted pools of color on the Silicone Craft Sheet.  Next, I smooched the paper into the Silicone Craft Sheet.  After each color, I thoroughly dried my paper with a heat tool.  I added Old Olive second, and Night of Navy ink last, being careful not to make it too dark.

For the sentiment, I stamped and embossed it in white on Vellum Paper.  Then, I fussy cut around the edges and adhered it to my project with Mini Glue Dots strategically placed behind some of the rounder letters.

Lastly, I added some Night of Navy Medium Baker’s Twine.  This is another new product you can find on page 201 of the Annual Catalog.  It has a perfect weight and flexibility, and I love fraying the ends for a tattered rustic look.

Supplies used on my card:

Well, happy shopping today and hope you can come join us at TGIF Challenges!  Simply load your project to your blog, Facebook, or the internet and use the InLinkz tool on the website to attach it to the TGIF Challenges website.  Each week, we pick a winner and it could be you!
Have a wonderful and creative day!
