Hello Friends, and welcome to a new TGIF Challenge! This week, we are showcasing Soft Pastels! These vibrant chalks are fun to use as coloring tools and great for a variety of techniques. You can find them on page 126 of the 2021-2022 Annual Catalog.
When I first started stamping (decades ago!) I remember being introduced to a technique using Versamark ink and pastels. At the time, I didn’t have a lot of ink colors, so using pastels was a cheap way to add lots of color to my projects. The technique is very simple. Stamp an image with Versamark on Basic White Cardstock, then use a sponge to rub the pastels over the stamped image. The pastels stick to the Versamark ink creating a lovely soft image.
Since the current Soft Pastels come in stick form, I found it easier to shave some chalk off the side with my Paper Snips. Then, I used a Sponge Dauber to pick up the chalk powder and apply it over the stamped image. I used multiple colors on each image, as the chalks are very easy to blend. For small areas, I applied the chalk with a Q-Tip.
All the stamped images (except the greeting) are from the Christmas Season Photopolymer Stamp Set. Solid images like these are perfect for technique. The greeting is from the coordinating Christmas To Remember Cling Stamp Set.
I love the whole Painted Christmas “mega” suite of products on pages 18 and 19 of the July-December Mini Catalog. Everything looks beautiful together, including the delicate die-cuts. To add a little dimension to the background dies, I sponged on a little Craft White ink.
For another technique using Soft Pastels, see my article from last summer on Watercoloring with Pastels:
