#TGIFC556 — Inspiration Challenge — Northern Lights Book Treat Box

By | December 19, 2025

Happy Friday! It’s that time of year, when friends and family gather to celebrate the season. The house is decorated, my Christmas cards are mailed, and my list of things to do is getting smaller every day. I feel like I can relax a little and focus on fun details.

We have a couple dinner parties coming up, so last weekend I decided to make table treats. These first ones were inspired by this week’s TGIF Challenge: (Watch my blog this Sunday for the second set!)

What a beautiful picture! One of these days, I’d love to see the Northern Lights in person.

In the meantime, I used the photo as inspiration to decorate some Book Treat Boxes. To start, I used Blending Brushes to add ink to the covers in a similar pattern to the photo. Afterwards, I used a wet Water Painter to paint vertical lines creating the rays of light.

I used the Light & Wonder Dies to cut the trees and mountains from Basic Black and Basic White Cardstock and trimmed them down to fit across the 3″ width of the cover. Then, I used a Sponge Dauber to add Craft White ink to the die-cut trees. After adhering them, I used a Wink Of Stella Glitter Brush to flick splatter over the entire cover. The effect looks like glittering snow.

The final touch was a sentiment from the Greetings For You Mix & Match Ephemera Pack layered over some Balmy Blue Sheer Ribbon and a few Frosted Iridescent Dots.

This project was super easy to make so I could create one for each guest.

I wanted to make it easy to open and re-close the boxes without damaging them. So, I removed the adhesive from the tabs. (Undo from Amazon works great!) Then, I added a layer of decorative paper on the left that’s only attached on the top, bottom and right sides. That way, the tab can slip in-between the cover and the layer of paper to hold the book closed.

I hope this inspires you. Be sure to check out the TGIF Challenges Blog to see what the other designers came up with this week. You can also enter our challenge at the bottom of that post.
