Hello and welcome to the Stamping Sunday Blog Hop for September. This month, our theme is “Celebrate,” which is just perfect, because my family has four birthdays this month including my son, husband, nephew and myself (lots of Virgos!)
For this blog hop, the designers have two choices. We can design 1) three versions of a card for beginner, casual, and avid stampers, or 2) a 3D project and a card. I chose the second option, but I tweaked the rules a little and created a 3-D card and tag for my son’s birthday.
3D What’s Cooking/Party Puffin Card:
My son is a twenty-something young adult who LOVES barbequing and cooking. Seriously, every post/story on his Instagram account is about cooking. (I should talk, since almost every post I create is about cards!) He’s very scientific and loves experimenting with different recipes and cooking methods. His latest kick is “sous vide,” which he’s really good at it! My husband and I were teasing him recently when we learned that one of the finalists on Master Chef is a Physical Therapist. We asked if he was planning on giving up his career goals to get on the show! 🙂
The obvious choice for his birthday card was the What’s Cooking Bundle, but I had a little more in mind. It started when I received a really cool fun-fold/3D birthday card last weekend from my friend and upline Melissa Ellis. I just loved the clever layout of her card, so I decided to copy it! Look what happens when you open the card!
I also decided to make the card a little playful by adding some Party Puffins and a fun interactive sentiment using the Give It A Whirl Dies. Hey, my son may be older, but I think he’ll really enjoy this and the work that went into it. What’s really cool is that the little chef hat from the What’s Cooking Stamp Set fits the smallest Party Puffin perfectly!
I have to admit that I’ve had the Give It A Whirl Dies for a bit, but I’ve been a little intimidated to try them. Now I feel a little silly, because honestly, they are very easy. I started by cutting out the wheel first. The wheel die is conveniently divided into three sections, so I simply used it as a guide to add my sentiments.
Next, I cut out the top layer with the die-cut that includes the little cut-out to move the wheel and then chose a position for the window. By aligning the holes on all the dies, everything falls into place. Next, I used a round brad to attach all the pieces together, and then I raised the entire interactive layer with Dimensionals when I attached it to my card front, in order to give the wheel a little room to spin. It all worked perfectly.
My son frequently cooks not just for himself, but for his two housemates. So, that’s why I chose the sentiment “To Someone Who Makes Others Happy.” They love eating all his creations!
This card is made of two flat 4-1/4″ x 5-1/4″ cardstock layers on the front and back. They are connected with a sheet of designer series paper measuring 11″ x 4″ and scored at 2-3/4″, 5-1/2″, and 8-1/4″. After burnishing the score marks of the connector sheet, I adhered it to the the back layer first and then aligned the top.
On the inside, I created some fun cooking scenes, including chopped veggies and hanging kitchen tools. I stamped the images with Memento ink and colored them with Stampin’ Blends Markers. Then, to make the knives realistic-looking, I cut out the blades from Silver Foil Specialty Paper.
For my Party Puffins, I embossed them in black and colored them with Stampin’ Blends Markers. Throughout my card, I used the Penguin Playmates Designer Series Paper, which is FREE during Sale-A-Bration with a qualifying purchase of $50 or more through September 30, 2021. I love the colors and thought they were perfect for a masculine card.
Birthday Tag:
Next, I made a matching birthday tag featuring the Party Puffin Stamp Set and Tailor Made Tags Dies (which I absolutely LOVE!) It also features some Give It A Whirl die-cuts.
I colored the birthday cake with Stampin’ Blends Markers and used a Blender Brush and Misty Moonlight ink for the shading. Final details include some Clear Epoxy Essentials and a topper including a variety of white ribbons and some Linen Thread.
