For this month’s Stampin’ Fancy Friday, we are designing projects with characters, including animals, people, and basically anything with a face. I didn’t really have a lot of choices. My stash doesn’t typically include cutesy stamp sets with characters. But then I remembered the Taco Fiesta stamp set! It includes little face stamps!!!
To see all the designers’ character projects, keep an eye on the Stampin’ Fancy Friday Facebook and Instagram pages during April. We’d also love to see your creative ideas! Be sure to tag them with @stampinfancyfriday so we can find and admire them!
I love the “Holy Guacamole, It’s Your Birthday” sentiment in this stamp set!!! It’s so cute and funny. I decided to design the whole card around it and tried to ensure guacamole took center stage. I also attempted to design a unique layout. Therefore, I used the Watercolor Shapes stamps to create four focus areas, each with a different shape.
To create the background shapes, I inked up the Watercolor Shapes stamps with two colors. (I inked up one half of the stamp with one color and then rotated the stamp and inked up the other half with a second.) Then, I spritzed the stamp with water before stamping on Shimmery White Cardstock. Afterwards, I trimmed the shape close. Tip: More water causes fun blending, like the upper right, but too much messes up the outer edges. There’s a fine line.)
I stamped all the images with Stazon Ink on Shimmery White Cardstock and then watercolored them with the ink colors in the Product List below. I like to start with a light wash and then add more concentrated color to create shadows. For the cactus, I started with a light wash of Pear Pizzazz and then painted more concentrated lines while it was still damp. For the chips, I watercolored with Crushed Curry ink and then added Crumb Cake ink to make them look baked. For the burrito, I used Crumb Cake and some very watered down Crushed Curry.
I added faces to a lot of the stamped images to go with the character theme. Then, as I was adding the sombrero to my cactus “señor”, I thought it would be fun to make a cactus “señorita.” So, I created a skirt of red chili peppers and hair out of black baker’s twine! Her bun is a little french knot. I think it worked, what about you?
My guacamole section has all sorts of great elements, including a Mexican inspired bowl, chips and a lime. I also backed the sentiment with an avocado. Then, to emphasize the guacamole, I watercolored the word with Granny Apple Green ink.
Since the whole card is about a birthday and fiesta, I added some celebratory party stamps behind the piñata horse.
I created the dry embossed background with the Cane Weave 3D Embossing Folder, which made me think of the tropics and Mexico. Then, the final touch was some Night of Navy Bordered Ribbon and 2022-2024 In Color Matte Decorative Dots.
I hope you enjoyed my character card!
Have a wonderful and creative day!
