This week, Heidi is the hostess at MDS Monday, and she’s designed a simple, yet fun vertical checkerboard sketch. This sketch leaves lots of possibilities to use designer paper, embellishments or stamps to decorate in between the photos.
I decided to use the sketch to scrap a bunch of pictures from our recent visit to Mammoth. My mom had flown to Sacramento to watch one of Shannon’s dance competitions, and then Shannon and I drove her back home to Mammoth for a little vacation. We spent most of the trip hanging out and taking walks. (There really wasn’t a lot of snow, so we weren’t too interested in skiing.) One day, we decided to ride to the top of the mountain on the gondola. Shannon tried to do that with my mom over Christmas, but the gondola was closed down that particular day due to high winds. So I made a big effort to make sure we watched the weather this time and had a successful trip.
I look at these pictures now and realize that Shannon looked a little pale. Little did we know that she was coming down with pneumonia!
There are a couple tricks that I used to complete my page. First, when creating the layout, I used photo boxes for both the photos and the papers in between. That way, it was easy to fill them with either photos or colors. At first, I laid out my page just like Heidi’s template, but as I added the pictures, I realized that I needed to lengthen one, which required a little adjusting. For a layout like this, it’s important to align the boxes and get the spacing between them even before rotating the whole group. If you try afterwards, the boxes won’t stay properly stacked. Therefore, when I made my adjustments, I had to rotate everything back to zero, adjust the boxes, and then re-align and rotate them back. Also, it’s important to un-group all the photo boxes after rotating them so you can fill them individually. I did a similar thing with the title. I aligned and spaced it horizontally, and once I was satisfied, I grouped all the letters / numbers and rotated them.
The background for my page includes some designer paper from an old download that’s no longer available called Days to Remember. It must have been an old Sale-A-Bration or Hostess download. It’s too bad, because it has some of my favorite papers and embellishments.
